On the afternoon of April 5, the 49th UESTC Scholar Forum — hosted by the university’s Graduate Student Union and organized by the Graduate Student Union of the School of Electronic Science and Engineering (National Exemplary School of Microelectronics) — was held online. Prof. Min Hu of the School was invited to introduce the applications and latest progress of terahertz science and technology.

Prof. Hu is a core member of the university’s terahertz team, working mainly on novel terahertz radiation sources and terahertz applications. In recent years he has led and undertaken several national projects, including the “973” Program. He has published dozens of SCI papers in journals such as Physical Review Letters, and has been invited many times to deliver plenary talks and chair sessions at domestic and international conferences.

Beginning with the background of the terahertz band, Prof. Hu explained its position in the electromagnetic spectrum and a century of information-technology development, stressing the importance of spectrum resources. He then detailed terahertz applications across physics, chemistry, materials science and astronomy, with a focus on terahertz radar and imaging — which offers high resolution and minimal harm to the human body, and holds great research potential. Finally, he discussed the bottlenecks in exploiting terahertz spectrum resources, possible solutions, and frontier directions.
In the Q&A session, students actively raised questions in the discussion area, and Prof. Hu answered them patiently. The lecture concluded successfully, with students saying they had gained a great deal.
