On the afternoon of April 5, the 49th UESTC Scholars’ Forum, hosted by the University Graduate Student Union and organized by the Graduate Student Union of the School of Electronic Science and Engineering (National Exemplary School of Microelectronics), was held online. Professor Min Hu from the School of Electronic Science and Engineering was invited to introduce the applications and latest advances in terahertz science and technology.

Professor Min Hu is a core member of our university’s terahertz research group, primarily engaged in novel terahertz radiation sources and applications of terahertz science and technology. In recent years, he has led and participated in multiple national-level projects, including those under the “973 Program.” He has published dozens of SCI papers in domestic and international academic journals such as Physical Review Letters and has been invited many times to present keynote speeches and serve as session chair at academic conferences at home and abroad.

During the lecture, Professor Min Hu began with an overview of terahertz background, explaining in detail its position within the electromagnetic spectrum and the development of information technology over the past century, while emphasizing the importance of spectrum resources. He then elaborated on terahertz applications across multiple disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials science, and astronomy, with a particular focus on terahertz radar and imaging. Terahertz imaging offers advantages including high resolution and minimal harm to the human body, holding great potential for research and development. Finally, Professor Min Hu discussed the bottlenecks and solutions in developing and utilizing terahertz spectrum resources, and provided an introduction to frontier research and development in the field.
During the interactive Q&A session, students actively participated and enthusiastically posed questions in the discussion area, and Professor Min Hu patiently addressed each one. The lecture concluded successfully, with students expressing that they gained substantial insights.
