Recently, Tencent’s “the Tanyuan Program2024” co-founded Xinjiang Station Open Day event was held in Kuqa. The event focused on the identification of smoked murals by the Kizil Grottoes and the demand for AI virtual restoration of incomplete murals, and promoted the co-creation project of this scene to improve technical performance, optimize platform application, and explore cultural activation. National civil protection, cultural, technical experts and local leaders from Xinjiang gathered to witness the Kizil Grottoes resurrected in the digital age.

With the support of Tencent “the Tanyuan Program 2024”, Chengdu Miji Technology Co., Ltd., together with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) the School of Electronic Science and Engineering and the School of Arts and Archaeology of Zhejiang University, contributed to the restoration of the Kizil Grottoes mural. The project used multimodal fusion technology of robotic arm, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to perform non-destructive detection and image recognition of the smoked mural in the Kizil Grottoes Cave 161.

the terahertz wave has excellent characteristics such as strong penetrability and safety. In recent years, it has attracted much attention from all walks of life and has great potential in the field of non-destructive testing of cultural relics. The strong penetration and non-destructive recognition of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy technology can penetrate the smoke stain layer without damaging the mural, extract the color layer information of the covered mural, and completely identify the covered mural, providing a diversified means for cultural relics protection.

At the event, Professor Zhang Hui, chairman of the Department of Archaeology and Culture at Zhejiang University, disclosed the breakthrough achievements of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy technology in the field of smoked mural recognition. It is worth noting that we are the first in the world to apply terahertz, XRF and structured light multimodal fusion technology to extract hidden information of precious cultural relics. The application of this technology not only opens up new avenues for the conservation of the Kizil Grottoes, but also provides valuable technical references and innovative ideas for the protection of other cultural heritage.
